Call for ARC3-2 Case Studies

The UCCRN’s first major publication was Climate Change and Cities: First Assessment Report of the Urban Climate Change Research Network (ARC3) (ISBN-10: 1107004209), published by Cambridge University Press in 2011. The ARC3 report represented a four-year effort by ~100 authors from dozens of cities around the world, and is the first-ever global, interdisciplinary, cross-regional, science-based assessment to address climate risks, adaptation, mitigation, and policy mechanisms relevant to cities. The assessment articulated urban climate risk frameworks and climate science for cities, and derived policy implications for key urban sectors—water and sanitation, energy, transportation, public health—and systemic issues through land use and governance.  Also included were 46 case studies from both developed and developing country cities, showcasing best practices and lessons learned from mitigation and adaptation efforts.

Since the First ARC3 was published, local government officials, city networks, international organizations and many urban stakeholders have expressed interest in an updated international climate change and cities assessment report. The Second Assessment Report on Climate Change and Cities (ARC3-2) will consist of approximately 16 chapters that will contain between 2-7 case studies, yielding a potential range of cases from 30 to 100 in the entire volume. New with the second volume will be a Case Study Docking Station, which is being developed by Patrick Driscoll, Aalborg University-Copenhagen; Dr. Martin Lehmann, Aalborg University; Dr. David Major, Columbia University; William Solecki, Hunter College/CUNY; and Jovana Milic, Aalborg University.

ARC3-2 Case Study Docking Station and Call for Contributions

For the Second ARC3-2 Report, the UCCRN is developing a Case Study Docking Station in partnership with the University of Aalborg. The UCCRN ARC3-2 Case Study Docking Station will be a web-based, extractable database to inform both research and practice on climate change and cities. It will enable scientifically valid comparisons across a range of social, bio-physical, cultural, economic, and political contexts. The resulting database will be available for data extraction and analysis for a variety of different research and practice needs.

We are therefore currently seeking Case Studies of climate change risks and vulnerabilities in cities, as well as mitigation and adaptation planning and implementation cases from city leaders, scholars, practitioners, and international city organizations around the world. We are especially interested in lessons learned, and innovative approaches to climate change policy, adaptation, and mitigation.

Once Case Study proposals have been submitted for consideration, the ARC3-2 Co-Editors will evaluate and select those cases that meet selection criteria (below) and fit best into the Case Study Docking Station and illustrate key conceptsA few selected Case Studies within the Case Study Docking Station will be published in the ARC3-2 Report.

A complete Case Study should aim to cover the following points:

1. Clearly identify geography and topic addressed;

2. Clearly communicate relevance to climate change adaptation and mitigation in terms of action and strategy;

3. Include visual and textual content and show clarity in each;

4. Describe and discuss action/policy drivers. For example: community as a driver, NGO as a driver, local authorities or industry or businesses as a driver of climate change adaptation;

5. Describe impact and scale; and

6. Demonstrate clear lessons that other cities and stakeholders can learn from
